And Holy Woman asking if he sent me.

This is a warning. Or a threat. Old Nila is talking to me. I can feel his eyes on me. Watch yourself, old woman. Watch yourself.

A crow’s caw startles me into motion, back towards my camp.

I search in my mind for a psalm to hum. None comes to my lips.

“Beyond The One Who Binds Water. By The One Who Sees . . .” I mumble instead, but can’t recall the rest of the rhyme.

All at once, there’s crawling in the forest. Croaking, baying. Everything is alive, laughing at me.
